THE ORIGINAL MD4-S AND LATER MD4-2D TRANSAXLES WERE ENGINEERED FOR OFF ROAD RACE CARS WITH 2L OR LESS ENGINE DISPLACEMENT AND SAND CARS WITH SUBARU, MAZDA, OR PINTO POWER, AS THIS WAS THE STATE OF THE ART AT THE TIME. THE UNITS PERFORMED WELL BEYOND THEIR ENGINEERED REQUIREMENTS AND QUICKLY BECAME THE STANDARD FOR QUALITY OFF ROAD TRANSAXLES. AS V-8 POWERED SAND CARS STARTED TO BECOME POPULAR AND ENGINE BUILDERS BECAME ADEPT AT SQUEEZING MORE POWER OUT OF THEM, NEW DEMANDS WERE PLACED ON OFF ROAD TRANSAXLES. THE AXIAL LOAD IMPOSED ON THE MD4-2D MAINSHAFT BEARING BY THE HIGH TORQUE OUTPUT OF V-8 ENGINES CAUSES SEEMINGLY PREMATURE FAILURE OF THE BEARING. THERE IS AN ATTITUDE PREVALENT AMONG SOME SAND CAR OWNERS THAT FOR THE PRICE PAID, THE MENDEOLAS SHOULD BE ABLE TO HOLD UP AGAINST ANY POWER SOURCE, AND THIS IS JUST NOT TRUE. THERE ARE TRANSAXLES ON THE MARKET THAT ARE ENGINEERED FOR V-8 POWER, AND THEY START IN THE $14,000 PRICE RANGE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE MENDEOLA S4, WHICH IS A FANTASTIC BARGAIN FOR $10,900.

 TRANSWORKS HAS ENGINEERED AN UPGRADE FOR THE MD4-2D THAT ALLOWS USE WITH HIGH HORSEPOWER, HIGH TORQUE V-8'S WITHOUT MAINSHAFT BEARING FAILURE. WE WANT TO STRESS THAT WE CONSIDER THIS AN UPGRADE, AS OPPOSED TO A SOLUTION TO A DESIGN PROBLEM. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ORIGINAL MD4-2D DESIGN, AS IT EXCEEDS IT'S DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS AS IS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS UPGRADE IS TO PUT THE MD4-2D IN ANOTHER CLASS, ONE THAT IS EXPECTED TO PERFORM AGAINST V-8 POWER, MAKING IT A RIDICULOUSLY INEXPENSIVE BARGAIN. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE MENDEOLA S4, YOU WOULD HAVE TO SPEND MORE THAN TWICE AS MUCH FOR A TRANSAXLE DESIGNED FOR V-8 POWER THAN FOR A NEW MD4-2D WITH OUR BEARING UPGRADE. THESE PARTS MAY ALSO BE INSTALLED IN EXISTING MD4-2D'S BY TRANSWORKS OR ANY OTHER AUTHORIZED MENDEOLA DEALER.

OUR UPGRADE CONSISTS OF A DOUBLE ROW, ANGULAR CONTACT BEARING, 4130 HEAT TREATED CHROMOLY SLEEVE AND NUT, 8620 HEAT TREATED SHIFT SHAFT, AND CUSTOM ALUMINUM NOSE CONE. THE BEARING HAS A HIGHER RADIAL AND THRUST LOAD RATING THAN THE ORIGINAL BEARING, IS RATED FOR 14,500RPM IN GEAR OIL, AND UNLIKE THE ORIGINAL BEARING, IS DESIGNED TO CARRY A HIGH AXIAL LOAD. WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THIS UPGRADE PUTS THE MD4-2D IN A CLASS OF TRANSAXLES DESIGNED FOR LS1, LS6, AND NORTHSTAR POWER.
